When I first heard about Innistrad bringing flip cards to Magic, I was, like many of you probably were, confused. “Why would WotC do this to us? It seems so ridiculous and unnecessary,” I thought. So this past FNM was the last for many decks: Valakut, RDW (in its current form anyway), and my favorite, Splinter Twin. “But wait a minute Matt!” I hear you all saying, “Squadron Hawk has rotated out too, and that means NO MORE CAW-BLADE!” The deck also loses a strong cantrip with Preordain going out, and although Ponder is good, it is not nearly as strong as when you have access to both cards. With the rotation of my splinter twin deck right around the corner, I have been frantically searching for the next deck that I will choose to pilot in Standard come Sept. 30th. Having looked at a myriad of different options: U/W or U/B control, Vampires (after seeing some of the Innistrad spoilers, I can say they’re going to be impressive), and a few others; I came to the conclusion that the deck that seems to most suit me would be a Tempered Steel variant.
