About Matthew Sedwick

I've only been playing Magic since shortly before the release of New Phyrexia, and I was introduced to the game though a friend who played heavily when he was younger. I began with casual games and decks and moved into EDH (refusing to call it commander) and became enthralled quickly, I built a mono-green deck full of the best cards that I could find and that my friends would give me. Although it was my first serious deck, it turned out to be pretty competitive; it even placed 4th in the WotC Commander release tournament. I showed up at TGG asking Jeff questions about cards and learning the in's and out's of the place when I began attending events at TGG and became a regular, coming in almost every weekend to play EDH. Eventually I wanted more and became involved in the competitive side of Magic, I moved into standard and after playing a few less powerful decks, picked up Splinter Twin. Aside from Magic, my other interests are cars, music, and competitive cycling. I currently reside in central Arizona with my wife and am attempting at making a name for myself in the local shops in the area, continuously building upon my collection of cards.

Werewolves. Griefer’s paradise or constructed sleeper?

When I first heard about Innistrad bringing flip cards to Magic, I was, like many of you probably were, confused. “Why would WotC do this to us? It seems so ridiculous and unnecessary,” I thought. Many of the old school and big name players were outraged, claiming that they would ruin draft forever and how these cards would never see play in constructed, and I was right there with them. These cards were going to screw up the pace of games by having people flip their cards or bring in extra cards from outside of the game. All they’re going … Continue reading

Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead… Wait, What?

Matthew Sedwick

So this past FNM was the last for many decks: Valakut, RDW (in its current form anyway), and my favorite, Splinter Twin. “But wait a minute Matt!” I hear you all saying, “Squadron Hawk has rotated out too, and that means NO MORE CAW-BLADE!” The deck also loses a strong cantrip with Preordain going out, and although Ponder is good, it is not nearly as strong as when you have access to both cards. Well don’t get too excited just yet because, yes, that pesky Squadron Hawk is gone; however, Innistrad has seemingly supplied some new pieces for the supposedly … Continue reading

My Attempt at Tempered Steel

Matthew Sedwick

With the rotation of my splinter twin deck right around the corner, I have been frantically searching for the next deck that I will choose to pilot in Standard come Sept. 30th. Having looked at a myriad of different options: U/W or U/B control, Vampires (after seeing some of the Innistrad spoilers, I can say they’re going to be impressive), and a few others; I came to the conclusion that the deck that seems to most suit me would be a Tempered Steel variant. Now, Tempered Steel is already quite and established deck, and come rotation it will loose one … Continue reading
